Guest Testimonials

Our first day here we open the curtains to be greeted by the view of a Great Blue Heron standing among the rocks of your little beach area!  For our 20th anniversary what we were looking for was a place that offered quiet an seclusion away from very busy lives! Castaway Ocean Lodge was just the ticket!  Quiet relaxing days of no particular schedule made this an anniversary to remember!

Spent a wonderful 5 days at Sai Beach House. Thank you for sharing your amazingly designed house situated in such beautiful surroundings. Clearly a lot of thought and love went into designing and building this place. Also, the sound system is fantastic and helped make our stay even more enjoyable. We hope to return in the future.

We stayed here for the second week of our honeymoon and although the weather wasn't really great we had a lovely time. Francis Louis House will be long remembered fondly. It is a beautiful cottage, both rustic and stylish. The beach also is stunning. We love hearing the waves all day and all night. Thanks.

We're both architects so it was a particular pleasure to stay in a cottage that we had seen published. Bay Bluff Cottage is beautiful! We wish more people were building contemporary cottages and the site is gorgeous!

Description

This one-and-a-half storey Dutch Colonial style house was built in 1784 for the Loyalist Joseph Bell a tanner and shoemaker who came to Shelburne in 1783 to escape the American Revolution. The Captain Bell House is recognized as a
Historic Property.

The house was recently updated and restored to retain much of its original character and to update the home for comfort. The original framing, roofline, portions of the foundation and other historic elements such as the fine work around the windows and doors were preserved. The ground floor features a large kitchen complete with a central cooking island and propane fireplace; a large pantry leads from the kitchen to the formal dining room. The living and dining rooms are bright and sunny with a spectacular view of the harbour. Laundry facilities and a 3-piece washroom room complete the downstairs floor plan. A unique original circular staircase leads upstairs to the bedrooms and bathroom and adds to the understated elegance rarely found in homes of this period.

Painted in muted tones and decorated with antique furnishings, wing back chairs and beautiful paintings, the house is the essence of calm. Enjoy unparalleled views of Shelburne Harbor from a peaceful setting along with the convenience of being just a short walk from all that the historic town of Shelburne has to offer. Some of the best ocean scenery, quaint fishing villages and unspoiled beaches that Nova Scotia’s Lighthouse Route has to offer are just a few minutes drive away. Launch your kayak into the calm waters from the front lawn or just relax and watch the seabirds, sailboats and other harbour activity.

Location

The Captain Bell House is located at the head of Shelburne’s pristine Harbour, on Nova Scotia’s South Shore. At the end of a quiet lane, this historic home enjoys a peaceful location, with an unbelievable view. On a clear day, you can see the Sandy Point Lighthouse at the neck of the harbour. The lovely historic town of Shelburne with its museums, shops and restaurants is only a 10-minute stroll from the house. The scenic Lighthouse Route and several unspoiled beaches are just a few minutes drive away.
