Guest Testimonials

What a lovely place to spend our week here in Nova Scotia!  The view of the harbour is spectacular.  We've enjoyed a glorious week of Indian Summer traveling along the lighthouse trail. A few favourite sights were Peggy's Cove and Mahone Bay and the Saturday morning Farmer's Market in Halifax.  Enjoying a soak in the hot tub after driving all day was so relaxing.  We had a great week at Castaway Ocean Lodge!

We stayed here for the second week of our honeymoon and although the weather wasn't really great we had a lovely time. Francis Louis House will be long remembered fondly. It is a beautiful cottage, both rustic and stylish. The beach also is stunning. We love hearing the waves all day and all night. Thanks.

Our weekend at the cottage was awesome! We found the cottage easily and were thrilled with the roomy interior and modern decor. The cottage was immaculate - clean, fresh and fully stocked with everything we needed to enjoy a few days at the beach. I hope to plan another stay at Summerset Cottage soon. Thank you!

We enjoyed our stay very much at the Castaway Ocean Lodge with a beautiful vista. The perfect place for an adirondack family to unwind for a week. This was our first visit to Nova Scotia. We viewed an eagle soaring! A perfect place for Kayaks and hot tub.Thank you Helen and John.

Salvages Lighthouse

The Salvages Lighthouse or Halfmoons Lighthouse is visible on a clear day from the Blanche Beach

Description

The Salvages are a line of rocks, nearly 3 kilometers long situated on the southern side of the approach to Negro Harbour.  Locally, the rocks are know as The Halfmoons, due to the crescent-shaped arrangement of some of the rocks.

As the southeast side of the rocks are steep, approaching them at night or during thick weather is a dangerous undertaking.  In 1915 a fog alarm was built upon a rock near the southern end of The Salvages that rose approximately 3 meters out of the sea.

Because of its exposed location, the fog alarm building was built of concrete with walls 41 centimeters thick to withstand the pounding of the North Atlantic.
