Before our trip Helen gave me an extensive package of information about Shelburne and Nova Scotia and details about the house. If you’re going to use the stand-up paddle boards don’t forget to sign your liability waiver! It was so much fun to take them out on the open water.
The house is quite secluded and it’s gorgeous! The photos in the listing are very accurate.
I was pleased to see so many personal touches in Neptune’s Rise. For instance, there were tons of games and books to help you pass the time without phone, internet, or tv. There were lots of pastimes for kids too, such as colored pencils, books, and toys. The kitchen was stocked with all the pots, pans, and utensils that you’d need to prepare home-cooked meals. I was a bit concerned about a lack of kitchenware, especially due to COVID-19, but we found everything that we needed. Importantly, there was a percolator and a French press for coffee in the morning.
The bedrooms were spacious and had a great deal of storage, and the beds were very comfortable! I thought the overall decor was a nice blend of modern and personal touches.
We didn’t spend a ton of time in Shelburne because we spent our days going to beaches and lighthouses around the shore. But, we did have a great time at Boxing Rock and their shandy is the perfect summertime drink. I also recommend: the tomato soup at the Keeper’s Kitchen at the Cape Forchu lighthouse, Crescent Beach in Lockeport, and hiking at Thomas Raddall Provincial Park.
This was our most memorable experience from Neptune’s Rise …
We wanted to try the paddle boards so we brought them down to the water and started paddling around near the house. When we got our sea legs we decided to paddle to a sandy beach across the cove. It was a bit of a jaunt, and the waves made it a bit difficult to land on the beach, but it was well worth it. On our way back we spotted a seal who was watching us from a distance. The seal must have been curious because it swam closer and closer. I guess the seal’s curiosity drew the attention of its friends because before long there was a group of 5 seals! At this point I was trying to remember anything I could about the predatory tendencies of seals and I tried to keep my mind on getting back to shore. We paddled home without incident and we were followed by the curious seal. That seal watched as I floated near the shore and drank my shandy. When it realized I wasn’t going to do anything interesting it joined its friends and swam back out to sea.
An amazing place! We couldn't ask for a more beautiful location to spend our honeymoon. This was exactly what we were looking for. We will alsways treasure the time we spent here at Castaway Ocean Lodge.
The McCay family thoroughly enjoyed themsleves in this superb house! Thank you for making our stay so pleasant.
A Hidden Gem
Red Head Retreat is remote enough to make you feel as though you "got away" and close enough to historic attractions and pristine beaches to guarantee a terrific stay rain or shine. I chose this cottage for my ability to bring my pets and for its proximity to the shore line. I would come back in a heart beat. The open concept and decor are modern and homey. The beds and furniture are comfortable. There are snowshoe hares, deer and even porcupines to keep you entertained. I was warned about ticks which are many this year. I simply made sure my cats had the proper treatments and kept an eye on their fur. We had no mishaps. Minor thoughts of improvement would be a fan in the master bedroom, additional outdoor chairs and a supply of fresh chopped wood. Everything else was wonderful. Thank you to Sandy Lane for your attention to detail and to the owner for sharing their cottage. |

Scroll down for a MAP showing the location of this cottage. In May and June parts of the beach become a protected wildlife sanctuary, as it is here that the endangered Piping Plover return each year to nest and rear their young. During the breeding season dogs must be leashed and people are asked to avoid the designated nesting areas.15 minutes away Lockeport is the closest town to this cottage. Lockeport is known for its Crescent Beach - a stunning scimitar of white sand approximately 1.5 km or 1 mile long. Lockeport hosts a number of festivals and events during the summer months: Canada Day Celebrations, Harmony Bazaar Festival of Women in Song and the Lockeport Sea Derby. The Canada Day celebration is always on the first of July, Harmony Bazaar typically takes place on the last weekend in July while the Sea Derby is usually on the second weekend in August. Crescent Beach Centre hosts the Sea Derby and a number of family events, such as the Beach Bash. Also worth investigating is Nova Scotia's only Registered Historic Streetscape, made up of five houses built by descendants of Jonathan Locke between 1836 and 1876. The houses offer an interesting cross section of historical architecture with excellent examples of Colonial, Georgian and Victorian styles. A walking-tour guidebook is available at the Little School Museum, which displays artifacts from early settlers. 25 minutes away, Shelburne is a charming and historic town set on a truly spectacular harbour. The harbour is unspoiled by industry or shipping and is used primarily for recreational activities like sailing and boating. Shelburne hosts a number of festivals and events over the year: Lobster Festival , Founders Days, the Whirligig & Weathervane Festival, and Pumpkin Festival. The Lobster Festival is usually held on the first weekend in June. The town wide yard sale is also on this same weekend. Founder's Days takes place on the third weekend in July. The Whirligig and the Pumpkin Festivals are fall festivals that take place on the third weekend in September and first weekend in October. The Shelburne County and Dory Museums are worth visiting. When John Williams established his dory shop in 1880, it was part of a dory-building industry, which at its peak, included at least seven shops along the Shelburne waterfront. During the early part of this century the shop employed five to seven men and produced 350 dories per year. The museum has a workshop where Dories are still built to this day (albeit not in such large quantities!). Amenities
