Guest Testimonials

Amazing beach 10 mins up the road. Fun place to explore. Our kids had a great time throwing rocks and finding crabs along the shore. We would totally stay at Ragged Island Retreat again. Stunning views from the loft over looking the ocean!

We had a wonderful time! The view is fantastic and we experienced all kinds of weather from warm and sunny to a "nor easter!" We love the seals! Had fun taking day trips; seeing all the beautiful beaaches and quaint villages. Lunenburg was great! Our best supper was the lobster we got in town. We cooked them here-they were delicious! All in all: a perfect way to celebrate our 30th anniversary!

The cottage is a lovely place ,so peaceful , so close to beaches , such a beautiful view. It has everything inside that you will need from batteries, candles, saran wrap, beach towels, first aid kit, movies, kids toys (story books), bug spray and soooo much more. It was so great to have two bathrooms and washer/dryer. One of the other great things is the outdoor shower came in so handy with the Grandchildren (they loved it). A all around great place !!!

The location is unbelievable - a lovely sandy beach within short walking distance. View from Bright View Cottage across the bay and gorgeous sunsets as promised. Best thing to be able to lie in bed and see the ocean! Cottage comfortable and well provisioned with everything you might need. Instructions clear and detailed and the cottage binder contained lots of helpful local information. Location is very private and access to beach would be difficult to impossible for anyone with mobility issues.

Description

Ragged Island Retreat is a newly constructed, modern prow-fronted cottage that takes full advantage of its ruggedly beautiful setting. Protected behind a stand of pines, the cottage has a view of sparkling waters and, at low tide, miles of golden sand banks.

The main floor consists of a well-designed, fully-equipped compact kitchen, open-concept living and dining room; downstairs guest bedroom with a queen size bed, 4-piece bathroom and a laundry/utility room. Upstairs is the master bedroom with a queen size bed; a second guest room with a set of bunk beds and a loft seating area.

Floor to ceiling windows and a large deck complete with garden furniture and a BBQ, expands the living space outside. Breathe the sea air and soak in the natural beauty that surrounds the cottage. It is the perfect spot to enjoy the many moods of the Atlantic Ocean.

Utterly private, yet it is easily accessible from Lockeport, the cottage overlooks a pristine and beautiful expanse of water, islands and coves in an inner coastal bay. Use it as a base to explore the area - there are several long white sandy beaches within a 15 minute drive. Go clamming right by the house; walk to the many nearby swimming spots. Cross the inlet by kayak to the sandbar directly opposite the cottage and walk to the magnificent and secluded three mile long Black Head beach. There are 3 kayaks at the cottage - 2 singles and 1 double. Or, simply sit back and relax in your own little piece of Canadian wilderness!

Location

Ragged Island Retreat is located at the end of private road in the sparsely populated community of East Ragged Island. Overlooking the inner bay, the cottage has a thoughtfully filtered view of the pristine waters and sand bars beyond. This cottage is - just down the lane from Bright View Cottage and Black Point Cottage.

15 minutes away Lockeport is the closest town to this cottage. Lockeport is known for its Crescent Beach - a stunning scimitar of white sand approximately 1.5 km or 1 mile long.

Lockeport hosts a number of festivals and events during the summer months: Canada Day Celebrations, Harmony Bazaar Festival of Women in Song and the Lockeport Sea Derby. The Canada Day celebration is always on the first of July, Harmony Bazaar typically take place on the last weekend in July while the Sea Derby is usually on the second weekend in August.

Crescent Beach Centre hosts the Sea Derby and a number of family events, such as the Beach Bash. Also worth investigating is Nova Scotia's only Registered Historic Street scape, made up of five houses built by descendants of Jonathan Locke between 1836 and 1876. The houses offer an interesting cross section of historical architecture with excellent examples of Colonial, Georgian and Victorian styles. A walking-tour guidebook is available at the Little School Museum, which displays artifacts from early settlers.

25 minutes away, Shelburne is the closest town to this cottage. A charming and historic town Shelburne is set on a truly spectacular harbour. The harbour is unspoiled by industry or shipping and is used primarily for recreational activities like sailing and boating.

Shelburne hosts a number of festivals and events over the year: Lobster Festival , Dock Street Days, the Whirligig & Weathervane Festival, and Pumpkin Festival.

The Lobster Festival is usually held on the first weekend in June. The town wide yard sale is also on this same weekend. Founder's Days take place on the third weekend in July. The Whirligig and the Pumpkin Festivals are fall festivals that take place on the third weekend in September and first weekend in October.

The Shelburne County and Dory Museums are worth visiting. When John Williams established his dory shop in 1880, it was part of a dory-building industry, which at its peak, included at least seven shops along the Shelburne waterfront. During the early part of this century the shop employed five to seven men and produced 350 dories per year. The museum has a workshop where Dories are still built to this day (albeit not in such large quantities!).

"Amazing beach 10 mins up the road. Fun place to explore. Our kids had a great time throwing rocks and finding crabs along the shore. We would totally stay here again. Stunning views from the loft over looking the ocean!"

"This is a lovely piece of land and a great cottage with everything that you need. You can enjoy kayaking and paddle right to a lovely, secluded beach. Enjoy coffee on the deck with beautiful views. The cottage has everything you could need and is quite modern. Great kitchen for cooking and all the bedrooms were super comfortable. We saw rabbits and deer, and tons of birds. This is a very private get away -- and you will not hear a car or other people from the cottage."
